Use a vegetable peeler to peel off the skin of the orange (avoiding the white pith) and put the strips into the slow cooker.
When you've removed the peel, halve the orange and squeeze all the juice into the slow cooker. Discard the orange shells. Add the remaining ingredients to the slow cooker, pop on the lid and cook on on HIGH for 2 hours of LOW for 3-4 hours.
Before serving, remove the whole spices and orange peel using a sieve or a slotted spoon. Add the vanilla, brandy (if using) and freshly orange slices, stir and serve.
To make WITHOUT a slow cooker:
Put the orange skin (peeled as above), orange juice, red wine, sugar, cloves, star anise and cinnamon sticks into a saucepan on the hob over a low heat. Allow to warm through for 20-30 minutes. Don't let the mixture bill or you will burn off the alcohol. Finish as step 3 above.
