All hail homemade Nice Cream! A wonderful creation that means we can make a light alternative dessert quickly and easily. Made by blending frozen fruit, it’s refined sugar free, can be made dairy free and takes just minutes to whiz together.

Three bowls filled with frozen healthy ice cream alternative.

What is Nice Cream, I hear you cry?

It’s a healthy ice cream alternative (made with frozen bananas) that’s growing in popularity, and here I show you how to make it in just a few minutes. It’s honestly so easy!

Simply blitz the ingredients together in a food processor – and that’s it! You can enjoy it straight away or freeze to firm it up a little.

It’s perfect for using up leftover bananas and you can make it with or without a little dairy. It works either way.

This is an ideal dessert for the whole family for those days when you want a little sweet treat but you don’t want anything that’s ultra processed or full of sugar.

More Nice Cream Flavours

You can customise your flavours in so many ways. Here are my favourite flavours to adapt my original Nice Cream recipe.

🍓 Strawberry: Add in 8 frozen strawberries when blending and top with some crushed up biscuits (you can use fresh strawberries if that’s what you have in).

🥜 Peanut Butter: Add in 3 tbsp of peanut butter and top with some chopped peanuts.

🍫 Chocolate: Add in 2 tbsp of cocoa powder and top with a few chocolate shavings.

Nice Cream Ingredients

Ingredients laid out on a white counter, including bananas, vanilla, salt and milk.
  • Bananas – You’ll need 3 for this 2-serving recipe. Peel and slice your fresh bananas and freeze them fully first. Or buy frozen bananas.
  • Milk – Use just 1 tablespoon of milk to give this a little creaminess. Use dairy free milk if you prefer.
  • Vanilla – Go for paste or extract here.
  • Salt – Just a small pinch for added flavour.

How to make Nice Cream

Chunks of banana on baking paper on a baking tray, ready to freeze.

1. Freeze your bananas fully in chunks first.

A food processor with whizzed up frozen banana inside.

2. Add your frozen bananas, milk, vanilla paste and salt into a food processor and blitz until very smooth.

TO SERVE: Eat as it is or pop in the freezer for 30 minutes–1 hour to firm up.

Storing

Nice Cream will keep in the freezer for up to 2 weeks

Store it in a container and scoop out to serve, giving a full ice cream effect!

FAQs

Does Nice Cream taste mainly of bananas?

Not overwhelmingly. The original recipe tastes more like creamy bananas, but the stronger you make any other added flavours, the less you can taste the banana.

Can I make Nice Cream without freezing the bananas first?

No! Freezing them is what makes them creamy and thick. If you use unfrozen bananas, your Nice Cream will be more like a banana smoothie to drink, rather than eat.

  1. Oh that looks SO good, with my new found love of iced cofee I must try something similar.

My first date with my husband came around 12 months after I’d first met him and we’d had numerous evenings out with a bigger group of friends first. I recall on the first time we were left to our own devices that we went to a Wetherspoons pub in Wardour Street, Soho. Which in the mid nineties was about as glamorous as recent graduates got!

  2. Great Googly Moogly this looks FAB!

Delighted to have found you through Buzzfeed Sarah – now following and getting lost in your past posts.

Keep up the awesome work <3

  3. I love quick ice cream recipes, am rarely bothered to make custard, wait for it to cool etc any more!

  4. Holy cow that is impressive! I can’t eat bananas but if I could I’d be at risk of making this EVERY DAY!

  5. Loving this recipe… instant blender ice cream is just pure genius. It changed my world when I discovered you could make ice cream in a matter of minutes. And as it’s fruit based I think it’s perfect breakfast food!!! I’m always freezing chunks of banana that’s just on the turn so I can whizz it up later. I’m going to give your recipe a try as i’m such a coffee and nutella fiend!!!!

Have to admit I giggled hearing your first date story Sarah… I met my husband at a party in a club/bar and I spent most of the evening trying to shake him off!! 14 years later and I still can’t get rid of him 😉
